The Communication Design program at IDC is designed to cultivate designers capable of identifying and addressing critical gaps in communication, particularly in contexts where needs are often overlooked or unmet. The program emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of the evolving role of communication in society by encouraging students to engage with complex challenges rooted in educational, environmental, socio-cultural, and socio-political issues at local, national, and global levels.
This program promotes both objective and subjective modes of inquiry, fostering rigorous engagement with contemporary issues that require creative and critical responses. Students are expected to develop a broad spectrum of competencies across various domains, including, but not limited to, graphic design, image-making, typography, film and video, instructional design, data visualization, information design, game design, wayfinding, map design, design for children, public space design, and publication design. A key emphasis is placed on the integration of form and content to ensure effective communication. Students are also encouraged to work in Indian languages with specific focus on India specific problem areas.
Over time, the Communication Design program has evolved to include specialized areas such as Interaction Design and Animation Design, now offered as distinct disciplines within the IDC School of Design. Applicants with a focused interest in these specific fields are encouraged to apply directly to the respective Master of Design programs.
