‘ERROR 409’ wins Most Polished Gameplay Award at CHI PLAY 2024

November 9, 2024

News

Our Students Vijayanand Banhatti, Yash Karanjavkar, Hayat Tamboli and Deekshaa Nim presented their game ‘Error 409: The Portable Phygital Game Based on Binary to Decimal Number Conversion’ which won the "Most Polished Gameplay" award in the ‘Student Game Design Competition’ at the ACM SIGCHI Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play (CHI PLAY), held in Finland from October 14-17, 2024. The project was successfully executed under the guidance of Prof. Prasad Bokil.

Their work has been published in CHI PLAY Companion '24: Companion Proceedings of the 2024 Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play.

Snaps of the Lightning Talk - 16th October 2024

This year, 17 submissions were received, among which 9 finalists were selected. During the event, finalists gave a lightning talk about their games and presented a demo of their games. An expert jury panel chose the winners.

Error 409 emerged from the idea of playing games between players rather than playing against the computer. The Error 409 game concept is to have two players compete against each other to convert decimal numbers to binary numbers (0 and 1), with conflict arising on the single game console. This portable game may act as a catalyst to spark children’s interest in fundamental computer science concepts through meaningful physical interactions.

The conceptualisation of the gameplay was initiated during a three-week course - ‘Designing games for children’, under the guidance of Prof. Prasad Bokil in the Autumn semester of 2024. The authors of the project executed and developed the polished form of the game later during the summer break. After a couple of rounds of filtering, the game was invited to be presented at Tampere University, Finland.
