Perspectives from Two Global Cities

About the Event

This collaborative seminar between IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay, USC Iovine and Young Academy, and Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California brings together academic, industry, and design-school perspectives to examine how design is being reshaped by a rapidly changing world. Rather than focusing on any single technology, it considers the combined effects of technological acceleration – including generative AI – changing forms of work and innovation, shifts in society and the global context, and the evolving role of higher education.

The seminar will feature three invited speakers offering unique perspectives on the forces reshaping design, followed by two panel discussions examining their implications for design practice and the future of design education. Together, these conversations will explore how the field is evolving, which foundational principles remain essential, and how educators, industry leaders, and emerging designers can prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

The event will bring together design educators, industry professionals, students, prospective students, and families interested in the future of design and innovation.

Higher Education in a World of Accelerating Change

Meet the SpeakerAnirudha JoshiProfessor, IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay

Universities were built around relatively stable bodies of knowledge, disciplines and professions. Today, the pace at which technology, society, and knowledge itself are changing is putting pressure on many of those assumptions. What should higher education continue to do when knowledge is increasingly abundant and rapidly changing? What should universities teach that remains valuable over time? And how should disciplines such as design rethink their relationship to technology, society and professional practice?

Anirudha Joshi
9:50 to 10:10 am

Designing in an Age of Technological Acceleration

Meet the SpeakerRahul KulkarniChief Technologist, DoNew and Samagra

Technology is reshaping products, organisations, industries and everyday life. AI is a visible example of a broader shift driven by computation, automation, networks, data and emerging technologies. This raises a question for design: what happens when machines become increasingly capable of solving problems that designers once solved? As computation takes on more of the work of generating, evaluating and executing ideas, the designer's role may need to change. What does this mean for how organisations innovate, build and compete? And what new opportunities emerge when we design not only for people, but also for systems that can increasingly act?

Designing for Human Experience in a Tech-Driven World

Meet the SpeakerGeetika KambliManaging Partner, Future Factory and Founder, Humanify

How do we measure the success of design in a way that reflects the real human experience? Humans experience the world in more intuitive ways, but with an increasing focus on tech we are constantly using indicators that are more math than intuition. How can we understand, design for, and measure experiences in a deep, meaningful, more humane way? And use this to design experiences that are better suited for the human world.

Design in a World of Accelerating Change

The panel will explore how technology, society, markets, and global conditions are changing the context in which design operates. What is genuinely new? What is simply a faster version of something familiar? In a conversation connecting the three talks, the panelists will discuss what these changes mean for the next generation of designers.

Rethinking Design Education for a Changing World

If technology, society, professions and the global environment are all changing, what should remain at the core of design education? What should change? Leaders of design schools reflect on what their institutions must change: curricula, research culture, admissions, faculty profiles, industry relationships and international partnerships, and on what they should hold steady.
