Project Topics

Pick any one the following problems for your group project as a starting point of departure. (It is OK to have multiple groups working on the same project). Please send an email to me about your choice of topic and the focus of your contextual inquiry (one email per group) by January 20:

  1. Better tools for nurses in hospitals: Study the activities being done by a nurse in a small hospital and design a set of tools so that she can do her job better. The tools may be new pieces of hardware, software that runs on existing hardware, or a combination.
  2. Key issuing system in IITB: We have a key issuing system managed through the security office and watchmen. Using current technology, redesign the key issuing system so that the security office and the watchmen are freed up to do other security jobs. (Hint: the smart card system used in many offices may not be suitable "as is" because we have multiple entries.)
  3. Social network for hostel mates: Design a product for better social networking among inmates of a hostel that make a better use of location-aware mobile phones. Extend the product to include alumni.
  4. Share a taxi: Design a system by which people will be able to share taxis from any point in the city to any other, and thereby save money, make new friends, increase employment (for taxi drivers), and reduce traffic.

Project Groups

The following grouping is based on current enrollment for the course. Each group can have 4-6 members. Let me know if, for some reason, your group moves out of these limits. (Roll number is provided to make it easy for you to contact the other people in the group.) (Updated on 1-2-11)
