Exploring Leather Crafts in Santiniketan
Summer Internship at Santiniketan, Guided by Ms Maitri Barman
Santiniketan was a place which interested
me since childhood. I wanted to learn
something new from scratch. I headed to
Silpa Sadana after being referred there
by my Professor. The pottery department
there was in itself interesting, boasting
fine pieces of work put up by students, but
there was something I felt more attached
to – the leather crafts department. Leather
has been in use since time immemorial.
What I learnt about leather crafts in
Santiniketan was that it was something
from South East Asia, nurtured and
evolved along with the traditional arts
of batik and leather embossing which is
practiced only in Santiniketan. |
