Chasni (The Sugar Syrup)
Guided By Prof. Shilpa Ranade

Chasni is a story narrated by one of the survivors of Acid-attacks in a poetic form, she shares her post-attack experiences of facing day to day life with disfigurement. Disfiguration (VIRUPAN) caused by the post-attack scars has an extremely traumatic effect on the survivors and affects them both physically and psychologically.

The film is a 2D hand drawn digital animation film, following a narrative in the form of poetry. The film features a woman who is a survivor of an acid attack. She wants to have tea, but finds out that the tea box is empty. She thinks about going out and buying a tea box, but remembers that stepping out and being noticed is not an easy task given her scars.

Chasni was conceived after the tragic acid attack on Ms. Preethi Rathi at Bandra Terminus, Mumbai (India) on 1st May 2013. She expired of a major acid injury just a month after the attack.

The film raises serious questions about the society we live in, and the way women are treated. As it stands, we first disfigure a human being and then question them about their disfigurement.
