Mumbai Rail Map (MRM)

Design for people: Most people argue than Indians rely on asking around for
information instead of referring to a map. But did we ever give them a map?

Mumbai suburban rail is one of the busiest rapid transit systems in the world — operating more than 2000 train services and carrying more than 7 million passengers daily. Rail map plays a critical role in providing the travel related information to help commuters navigate and guide them towards informed decision making prior to the journey. A map existed, but there was a need for a well designed Mumbai Rail Map. Communication design students Jaikishan and Snehal took up the challenge. After its launch on December 1, 2013, revisiting the map several times the map has evolved. Now the current version of MRM 6 is available in five languages, Hindi, Marathi, English, Gujarati and Urdu. The MRM Mobile App is in the making.

Re-design of the
immunization card

The Mother and Child Protection card records health and immunisation status of children between the ages of 0 to 16 years. It is an important part of the Universal Immunization Program run by the Government of India for free. A home-based physical record and a clinic side copy of the card exists for each child immunized under UIP. Contextual enquiries conducted at civic health posts in Mumbai and analysis of immunisation cards from Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra revealed issues such as problems of comprehension, effort required and accuracy of information while entering and retrieving data faced by healthcare service providers, caregivers of the child, surveyors and policy-makers. This redesign is an attempt to tackle such issues to create a user friendly card.
